NONNO LOU
mOUNT bARKER
Sangiovese

Rocky Horror Vineyard | Mount Barker
Established: 1996

Selectively harvested fruit allows for minimal handling in the winery and no crushing. This allows plenty of whole berry inclusion in the ferment and gentle handling. The grapes were fermented in small open fermenters and pigeaged twice daily. Pressed at dryness and aged in a 30-year-old 1800L Italian Botte. This allows for very subtle tannin integration with the fruit profile.

There is very little Sangiovese planted in Western Australia, and with the elegance and balance displayed in this wine, you would have to ask why. The wine displays all the hallmark characters of the variety – vibrant sweet cherry and red berry notes entwined within a savoury network of fine-grained tannins.

Nonno Lou is named after Callum's grandfather who unfortunately passed away in 2023. The second of his namesake wines that he has not had the chance to savour and enjoy. Having said that, I can say with my whole heart that he would have loved it. This wine honours his Tuscan background (from Lucca), and finally, it is made with a varietal originating from Tuscany, too. A lover of big and beautiful Italian Reds, he loved his family, he loved fiercely, and he was always there with a wink and a smile at the ready.
"My Nonno Luciano - My Super Tuscan".
